Recollections of pioneer families and early settlers in the country of Idaho's Salmon River valley (Lewis County and Idaho County, generally), including accounts of early homesteaders and ranchers.
Kenneth Batdorf Platt (1907-1990), a native of Deer Creek, ''has combined the harsh facts of rugged pioneer life with the eagerness and yearnings of a young boy growing up in the Salmon River valley. Platt calls upon his memory, written letters and diaries, and hundreds of photographs, many of which are included in this book, to recall his experiences growing up along the Salmon River.
The book is divided into four parts... The first part deals with Platt's recollections and reminiscences of his first 10 years of life, from 1907 to 1917, as his parents settled in Deer Creek. The second part is a historical narrative of the rapid settlement of the Deer Creek area and its ensuing decline, as the Platt family and others gradually moved away... The third part of the book deals with events and experiences of others living in the valley as their lives touched the Platt family and the problems they faced living in the wilderness. The final part deals with incidents, poems, anecdotes, and stories related to living in the wilderness settlement.'' - Lewiston Morning Tribune, September 8, 1978
