88 war songs. From the Preface: "The contents of this book are genuine "war songs" (the pieces for Decoration Day alone excepted). They were sung by the soldiers of the late war in every camp and bivouac of the army... Many of these songs found their way "across the lines," and were often sung by the "Johnnies" [i.e Johnny Reb] with, of course their own modified version of the poetry. It is believed that this collection of War Songs contains most, if not all, of the popular pieces of the time."
A shorter edition, lacking about a third of the songs found here, was compiled by George F. Root and published in 1863.
The inscription at the front reads: "Alice Baker / Brownton / Minn / Christmas / 1890". Her father Lewis H. Baker (1834-1883) had been a resident of Penn Township, McLeod County, Minnesota and served as a private with the 8th Minnesota Infantry Regiment at the time that they were engaged in the frontier conflict with the Sioux in the Dakotas, and from 1864 on, as a unit in the Union's Army of the Cumberland.
