Lawrence himself confessed that the Russians "meant an enormous amount" to him, and this book attempts to explain the significance of this remark.

George John Zytaruk (1927-2013) was a Canadian professor of English with an international reputation in D.H. Lawrence studies. His PhD degree in English was granted by the University of Washington in Seattle in 1965, the year his teaching at the University of Alberta began. Dr. Zytaruk was appointed in 1967 as founding President of Nipissing University, a post he held for 16 years. He additionally held the academic rank of full professor. After retirement he continued to teach English language and literature and in 1992 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Nipissing University. He became the first Professor Emeritus of the University in 1997, and President Emeritus in 2011. In May 2002, Nipissing's new academic wing was named Zytaruk Hall in his honor.
