Thirty-five tales drawn from the oral tradition of the Eskimos who make their homes along the Arctic coast and rivers of the Seward Peninsula. Each tale is accompanied by a full page illustration by George Ahgupuk (1911-2001). The tales were gathered by Edward Keithahn at Ahgupuk's home village of Shishmaref and were translated by his sister, Bessie Ahgupuk Moses.
Edward L. Keithahn (1900-1970) was made the curator of the Alaska Historical Library and Museum at Juneau in 1941. Previously, while working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, he had lived and taught in native villages for about 15 years, mainly among the Tlingit and Haida people. He was also the author of the well-known book on totem poles, Monuments in Cedar (1945).
