As the foreword says, ''this is the story of Captain Russell's most interesting and exciting adventures, struggles, triumphs, and historic achievements... As a young boy, he experienced the wild river before the dams,. He watched the end of the steamboat era when new diesel tugs came to the Columbia.''

The narrative includes accounts of his work during the building of the Bonneville and McNary dams and during World War II.
