A literary study of the characters in William Faulkner's Snopes trilogy (The Hamlet, The Town, The Mansion), the Snopses and the Sartorises, which rejects the assessment of George Marion O'Donnell's ''Faulkner's Mythology'' and any sweeping generalizations about the Snopses, and evaluates the social and historical backgrounds of both Frenchman's Bend and Jefferson to show the preexistence of the so-called Snopesism.

Morris Wei-hsin Tien (b. 1936), a Fulbright scholar, earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1977, and returned to Taiwan to serve as professor and chairman of the Department of English at National Central University.
