A lecture on the background, life, career and impact of Thomas Condon (1822-1907), the Irish Congregational minister, geologist, and paleontologist, noted for his pioneering work in Oregon. He was appointed the first State Geologist for Oregon in 1872, and resigned that post to become first professor of geology at the University of Oregon.

The papers of Thomas Condon referenced in this lecture are from the archives of the American Home Missionary Society located at the Amistad Research Center at Dillard University in New Orleans.

Egbert Oliver also wrote an unpublished book on Condon titled: The Remarkable History of Thomas Condon of Oregon: Pioneer Missionary and Geologist. The manuscript is held at the Oregon History Society Research Library.

Egbert Samuel Oliver (1902-1989) was an English professor, local historian, and an nationally recognized authority on Herman Melville. He was born in Yankton, Columbia County, Oregon, and taught English at Willamette University from 1929 until 1950, when he joined the English department of Portland State University. He served as head of the PSU English department for many years until his retirement as a professor emeritus in 1973. He was the author of The Tarbells of Yankton and The Shaping of a Family. His papers are held at the Duke University archives.
