A presentation of 30 works from three series of oil paintings by the Los Angeles-based artist Alec Egan (b. 1984): These were featured in the following solo shows: Close to Home (2015) at Freight + Volume, New York City; Sanctuary House (2016) at Ampersand Gallery, Portland, Oregon; and Welcome Home (2017) at the California Heritage Museum in Santa Monica.
"Egan's work scrutinizes the rituals of American domesticity by emphasizing the mythological value of accumulated objects and design trends, which take center stage in his unoccupied rooms. Each new painting adds layers of detail to a long narrative. His work is characterized by an indulgent yet calculated use of oil paint, applied in dynamic strokes that accentuate the diverse materiality of his medium. He is a storyteller, constructing a fictitious nostalgia rooted in the universal impulse to idolize memories of the past." Egan received his MFA in 2013 from the Otis College of Art and Design.
