Mary Pauline (Barbare) Love (1901-1991) was a lifelong resident of Tacoma, Washington. Most of the recipes included here were handed down by her mother and her friends. Her mother, Lucretia Justinijanovic, a native of Croatia from the Dalmatian coastal town of Stari Grad, located on the island of Hvar, immigrated to the United States in the late 1890s.
''As our family came from Starigrad... you will see some of these recipes are very Italian, but the Italians stole a lot of our recipes too. There were as many Scandinavians as Slavs in our neighborhood, you may run into some of their recipes, they liked our food and we like theirs.''
