During the Korean War, the primary mission of the 338th Engineer Combat Group, stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, was the training of combat engineers for overseas duty.
The 338th Engineer Group (Combat) was inclusive of the following battalions and companies:
27th Engineer Battalion (Combat).
168th Engineer Battalion (Combat).
407th Engineer Battalion (Combat).
55th Engineer Company (Panel Bridge).
490th Engineer Company (Light Equipment).
573rd Engineer Company (Ponton Bridge).
The 338th Engineer Combat Group was originally activated on 1 Nov 1943 at the 1145th Engineer Combat Group, and then assigned to XXI Corps. During WWII they provided engineering services to combat arms in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. It was inactivated in May 1946.
It was reactivated and assigned to Fifth Army in January 1947, redesignated as the 338th Engineer Combat Group on 3 June 1948, and ordered into active military service on 23 January 1951 at Omaha. They were relocated for training to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in February 1951. It was redesignated the 937th Engineer Combat Group in March 1955, shortly after the publication of this volume.
