''In the early 1830's Farnham was a small township of oil-lit streets and no drainage. At night watchmen patrolled, crying out the hours and arresting loose characters, night soil men went about their business of emptying cesspits. There was no railway, mail coaches linked the town with London and elsewhere. By the end of the Queen's long reign, however, Farnham was recognisable as the town we know today [1971]; the families of many of the men who had played a part in its development still live here'' (front flap).
