Title: Shanghai: High Lights, Low Lights, Tael Lights
Author: Maurine Karns; Pat Patterson
Description: Stated first edition, April 1936. Stitched Japanese binding with paper-covered boards. Wear at corners with a tiny bit of exposed board; edges have a few rubbed/worn spots; slight soiling to boards. Red end-papers are illustrated with a map of Shanghai. Two leaves have repaired closed tears (about 1.5 inches each tear). A few blemishes; no marks. Binding is sound. B/w photos. , 52 pp. 7.5" x 5.5".
A smartly written and candid handbook by two admittedly sometimes dissolute foreigners familiar with the scene. Advice for maximizing one's entertainments, with a considerable section given to the Shanghai nightlife (the fleshpots), including street girls (nymphs de pave), dancers, sing song girls, cabarets, drinking establishments, etc. A guidebook that is both amusing and provocative in its insights.
Maurine (Gates) Karns (1897-1968) grew up in and was a resident of Seattle prior to moving to China (though she attended high school in Portland). She traveled to China with her husband Franklin, a naval officer, in 1935 and resided there until November 1937.
