A society novel on American life in New York City in the 1870s. ''... as a story of journalistic life in New York, it shows not only a familiar acquaintance with the ins and outs of Printers Row, but a considerable range of observation covering all the prominent isms of the day, including free love, woman's rights, strikes, quacks, and various other modern institutions, which all come in for a pretty tolerable share of castigation.''

This book was published in October 1874. Theodore Davies (1847-March 1875) died of pneumonia at the age of 28. This was his first and only published work.
