Title: Life and Adventures of an Orphan Boy; or From the Cradle to the Ministry

Author: Hervey S. Sturdevant

Description: Book is a little bumped at head and tail of spine. Faint acidification to title page. Edges of text block have a little light foxing. Pages are free of marks and binding is tight. Hervey Smith Sturdevant (1848-1914) account of his life and ministry. Published by the author, Cornelius, Oregon, circa 1910. History, biography. Gray cloth boards, gilt title on front board.

An Advent minister, Sturdevant's account begins in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, briefly touching on the Civil War, boating on the North Branch of the Pennsylvania Canal, building the Lehigh Valley Railroad, George Miller and the Millerites, church in Hyde Park, and moving to Seguin, Sutherland Springs, and other places in Texas. In more detail he accounts his move to Oregon in 1883 where he located and set up a Baptist church in Beaverton, homesteaded and built a church in Mount Vincent (I think probably in Washington County, near the Coast Mountain Range—maybe near Banks or Vernonia), and preached in Buxton, Cornelius, and Hillsboro.

Photographic plates include: portrait of the author, his old home in Pennsylvania, his schoolhouse, the house built at Mount Vincent, the Mount Vincent Advent Christian Church, and the Advent Christian Church of Hillsboro.
