A highly detailed and fascinating snapshot of life in Oregon in 1876, with a general focus on the United States centennial celebration, and how it was celebrated and by who, in that year. There's so much information, eclectic and broad in scope, that it's difficult to even begin giving a description of what all is in this book. As stated in the introduction, it depicts Oregon's "mode of living, biases, problems, vigor and progress." There are a ton of anecdotes and ephemeral information that really paint a vivid picture of life in Oregon at the time.

A few examples of the many things it includes: biographies of six local composers and a few pieces of their (especially Edward Finck and his full music for the "Albany Gavotte," "Ashland Schottische," "Astoria Waltz," "Baker City March," "Corvallis Polonaise," "The Dalles Polka," "Forest Grove Galop," "Pendleton Waltz," etc.), information on each of Oregon's counties (at the time) and a list of their active post offices (including the date they opened and closed), information on the Oregon presentation at the International Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876 with a list of all the Oregonians who registered at it, reporting from the Ashland Baseball Club's game, much information on other sporting and social clubs, businesses, poetic compositions, programs for the celebrations, details about the attractions at the events (like the Corn and Bunion Doctor who appeared at the Centennial Hotel in Union, Oregon).
