"The Sun Shield in question is the Bronze Shield of Lough Gur, now in the National Museum. It was cast in c. 700 BC and recovered from the lake in 1872.
The story has two strands. It deals with Garvok of Carraig Aille who made an offering of the shield to the spirits of the lake and with Cahal Hayes who found it. Mostly set in Lough Gur, but the Atlantic is also crossed and Cahal meets 'Honey' Fitz in Boston before travelling on to San Francisco."
