This edition was published prior to the Harper & Row edition of 1951. Handsomely printed on fine paper with red numbering for the 100 meditations. Howard Thurman (1899-1981) was a great African-American preacher, spiritual leader, educator, and civil rights leader, and was a spiritual advisor to Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesse Jackson, and A. J. Muste, among many others. In 1944, after leaving his position as dean of Marsh Chapel at Howard University, he helped found the first multi-racial and multi-denominational church in the U.S., the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco. He served here until 1953 when he accepted a professorship at Boston University.
