Scarce. Inscribed, but not actually signed, to his granddaughter (the daughter of Jean Oliver Backstrom) on the ffep. Alfred Cookman Oliver, Jr. (1884-1952), was a chaplain in the United States Army and served in both World Wars, and was a veteran of the Bataan death march in the Philippines. This volume is a tour and guide of 15 churches in Paris, with an itinerary of three churches a day for five days. These are his "interpretations" with architectural, aesthetic, and historic details are given for each church along with some personal spiritual impressions. Foreword by Patrick J. Hurley.

The churches included: Saint Germain L'Auxerrois, Sainte Chapelle, Notre Dame, Basilique du Sacre Coeur, Sainte Marie Madeleine, Sainte Alexander Nevsky, Saint Julien de Pauvre, Eglise de la Sorbonne, Saint Etienne du Mont, Saint Eustace, Saint Gervais, Saint Denis, Saint Germain des Pres, Saint Sulpice, and Saint Medard. "

Oliver's first serious study of Paris churches was made during the spring of 1936, when during a stay of four months, he visited over sixty of these revealing places of worship and discovered that each and every one possessed a distinct personality."
