The account of Sherlock Bristol (1815-1906), a Congregational minister and graduate of Oberlin College, who traveled overland to Oregon, Idaho and California, throughout three trips to the West. He did pastoral work among various groups of pioneers, including spending a year with miners in 1850, encountered hostile Indians, an was in involved in the Abolition/Anti-Slavery movement. He recounts his adventures traveling the continent before the railroads were built in the west. He also worked for a while in Wisconsin, spent a couple years in Idaho, and finally a couple decades in Southern California.
