A New York City charity, the American Female Guardian Society was founded in 1834 to aid impoverished women and children and was entirely by women except for a small board of male counselors. The Advocate and Family Guardian periodical is a window into the culture of the charity, highly religious, with accounts of business, personal stories, descriptions of the social issues that were commonly faced, lists of donors to the charity, book reviews, poetry, statistics for the organization, physicians reports, etc.
