O'Donnell lived in Iran from 1957 to 1972. Originally working as a teacher in Isfahan, in the early 1960's he moved to the countryside to live on a farm called "Garden of the Brave in War" where he lived for about ten years. This memoir is drawn from his journals and reveals his observations of the traditional life of Iranians, providing what is essentially a complex character portrait of the people of Iran.
