Description: First Edition. Inscribed by Martha Bannan, the translator, on both the first and second free end papers from her residence "Cloud Home" in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Inscription includes the note: "Approved by Herr Kano Francke a former professor of Harvard College and an author of note" (Francke had been a professor of Germanic Literature at Harvard). There are a few short notes by Bannan in the book, one of them indicates that she is the author a a short, two stanza poem "Wisdom and Love" that appears between the two works by Goethe. Brown cloth boards with a gilt stamped portrait of Goethe. The title on the cover is "Some New Translations from Goethe." Top edge gilt. A little bit of wear at the head and foot of spine; corners rubbed. Book has been placed in a clear archival sleeve. 5 illustrated plates all with tissue guards.
