One hundred and eleven letters, describing her travel, written by the Anglo-Italian explorer and writer Freya Stark (1893-1993) during her journeys about Syria in 1927 and 1928; these were her fist travels outside of Europe. In the village of Brumana she settled down to play a lively part in the life of the local community and learned not only to speak but to think in colloquial arabic. Later she traveled through the wild Jebel Druze country to Transjordania and on to Jerusalem. On this journey she first tasted the dangers, the charm and the freedom of the desert and its people.
