The 12 page introduction by Isaac Goldberg provides the background and history of these plays and Gilbert's career in relation to their creation. Gilbert went on to much acclaim through his collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan and the fourteen comic operas they produced together between 1871 and 1896.
