Part One addresses sprinting, training, strategy, technique (types of starts and finishes, etc.) and includes sections on The Hurdles and Relay Running. Part Two addresses Stamina, including pacing, Cross Country, the Steeplechase and mile training. Part Three covers Strength with sections on the Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Hammer and Fifty-Six Pound Weight Throws. Part Four covers "Spring" with sections on the Running High Jump, Broad Jump, Hop Step and Jump, and the Pole Vault. The appendices include commentary on notable athletic achievements, meal planning for training, and extensive detailed track & field records, Olympic and otherwise.

Charles Paddock (1900-1943) was an American Olympic sprint runner. He competed in the 1920 Olympics (Antwerp) winning three medals, including two golds. In the 1924 Olympics (Paris) he won a silver medal and for these races he was portrayed in the 1981 Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire. The world record holder for the 100 and 200 m dashes, he was the first person to receive the designation of "the fastest man alive.
