Laid in is the book's introductory letter from the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company on their letterhead, dated August 1944. A history of the development of the beet sugar industry in the United States, specifically in the intermountain region, and of the growth an development of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company, one of the nation's most important producers.

The author, Fred G. Taylor (1875-1950), was the Vice-President of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company. He began his career in the industry in 1898 as a common laborer for the Amalgamated Sugar Company where he worked his way up to general manager. In 1921 he established the Fred G. Taylor Brokerage Company and sold beet sugar for several intermountain region producers. In 1928 he became an executive officer for the Sugar Institute in New York. After almost a decade on the east coast he returned to the west and settled in Salt Lake City and served as the Vice-President of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company until his death in 1950.
