Foreword by Franz Boas. This was the cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead's first book and was published just prior to receiving her PhD at Columbia University in 1929. Boas was her advisor at Columbia. It examines the life, including village and family dynamics, socio-sexual customs, etc., of Samoan adolescents with an emphasis on adolescent girls. This book was gifted to Margaret Van Horn, the daughter of the well known Bay Area artist Lucretia Van Horn. Margaret died in of tuberculosis in 1932 at the age of 23. According to the inscription it was gifted to her by the "Observer" of San Francisco radio station KFRC [probably broadcaster Munroe R. Upton].
