Eliot was an Oregon pioneer and an extremely influential member of Portland society, playing a part in the establishment of Reed College, the Library Association, the Oregon Humane Society, the Portland Art Association, the Boys & Girls Aid Society. He also happened to be T.S. Eliot's uncle.
