Inscribed on the ffep by the historian, antiquarian, and Oregon author Alfred Powers to J. A. Churchill (1862-1945), one of the fathers of education in Oregon. Julius Alonzo Churchill served as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1913 to 1926 and was president of Southern Oregon State Normal College in Ashland (1926-1932) and the Oregon State Normal School in Monmouth (1932-1939). Prior to that he was the school superintendent for Baker City from 1891 ot 1913. He also helped lay the groundwork for what became the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and today several schools throughout the state are named for him.
