Personal narrative of Steve J. Cebuhar (1916-1983), who worked for the U.S. Foreign Service in the early years of the Cold War, which included four years in Russia, Yugoslavia and Poland during the late 1940's. He was serving in Moscow under Ambassador Averell Harriman during the Yalta Conference. During his career with the State Department he served a total of eleven years in American embassies and consulates in Beirut, Moscow, Belgrade, Zagreb, Gdansk, Munich, Dublin, Venice and Le Havre.
His tales of harassment by secret police, the strong-arm methods of intimidation, and the tactics of terrorism in general are hair-raising. He himself almost gets rundown by a car in a deserted courtyard in Bucharest and subsequently uncovers the presence of a spy in the Embassy in Belgrade.
