Vachon's analysis of the physiological causes of death and anatomical experience of the Crucifixion, and his work to accurately depict such in his painting. Detailed explanations are given as the author/artist walks the reader through his preliminary sketches accurately representing the skeletal, musculature, circulatory, and epidemiological basis for the visual representation of Jesus' body on the cross. The painting was designed to be placed above the main altar at the Gonzaga Preparatory School and was unveiled at Gonzaga University (Spokane, Washington) in 1965.
Fr. Andrew William Vachon (1910-1979) was an artist and Jesuit priest and was Gonzaga University's artist-in-residence from 1965 to 1979.
