George Sperry Loftus (1873-1916) was a progressive reformer who worked with the farmers and grain merchants of the upper Midwest (particularly Minnesota and the Dakotas), and fought corporate selfishness, abuses of state institutional power, and discriminatory practices so as to create free and fair markets for grain producers. This volume contains some biographical material, but is primarily an account of the various legal and political battles he fought on the farmers' behalf.
The author, Usher Lloyd Burdick (1879-1960), was a U.S. Representative for North Dakota (in office 1935-1945, 1949-1959) and also served as that state's Lieutenant Governor between 1911-1913.
