Thirteen tales, which the author purports to be his own experiences and drawn from his notebooks, of mining camps, assayimg, mountaineering, ranching, and other adventures, many of which happen in Colorado and New Mexico (including an encounter with Billy the Kid in Puerto de Luna). The last third of the book describes the author's sailing from San Francisco to Hawaii and his encounters at Lahaina and at the leper colony on Molokai with Father Damien.
Forbes Heermans (1856-1928) graduated from Cornell University in 1878 and at his bequest his alma mater established the Forbes Heermans Prize for literature. The Syracuse native had traveled the world in the 1880's and 1890's and was the author of several novels, plays, and short stories.
