The author, the Rev. Martin Jenckes Steere (1814-1877), joined the Universalist Church in 1859 after having been a minister for over two decades with the Free Will Baptist denomination. Throughout his career, he was active in various parishes in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine.
