John Trowbridge (1843-1923) was an American physicist, noted for his research into electricity and magnetism. He was longtime professor of Physics at Harvard (1870-1910) and also served as the President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1908-1915). He wrote a few fantastical books for young people demonstrating various electrical devices.
The previous owner was Donald B. Dumas, a stage mechanic (and later manager) for various movie theatres in Portland, Oregon between 1917 and up through 1950's.
