Mary Jane Holmes (1825-1907) was a popular American author. This is a collection of three short stories: Mrs. Hallam's Companion (originally serialized in Lippincott's Magazine, 1894), The Spring Farm, The Hepburn Line (originally serialized in Lippincott's Magazine), and Mildred's Ambition (originally serialized in Ladies Home Journal 1888-89).
The list of novels by Holmes opposite the title page indicates that Mrs. Hallam's Companion is the latest publication.
