E. Lorne Knight (1893-1923), a native of McMinnville, Oregon, was an Arctic explorer and member of the ill-fated Stefansson expedition to Wrangel Island, wherewith he perished from scurvy. This book, Pechuck, documents his earlier experiences during the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1915-1919, and is based in part on Knight's own papers, provided to the author by Knight's father.

The author, Richard G. Montgomery (1897-1980), was a Portland author, book reviewer for the Oregonian, and assistant manager of the J. K. Gill Company.
