Author: T. J. [Thomas John] Bach

Description: Green card wraps. Light wear to covers. Pages clean. Illustrated. 120 pp. 7.5 x 5 inches.

A 1927 publication written by the Rev. T. J. Bach (1881-1963), a pioneer missionary to Venezuela with the Scandinavian Alliance Mission (SAM), and published for the promotion of Evangelical missionary work in South America. It presents the geography and history of South America, describes the native culture and religion, the history and influence of the Roman Catholic church, and describes issues of health and education.

The last thirty-five pages make an account of Protestant Evangelical missionary work on the continent, including some historical background, quite a bit of detail about the work of Captain Allen Francis Gardiner (b. 1794) and the London Missionary Society, the American and British Bible Societies. There are small, but identified portraits of missionaries of the SAM, including marrieds, their children, and single missionaries. Some pictures and brief information are given on contemporary missionaries, including the Rev. P. A. Nelson, Rev. O. J. Lundell, and Ida Malmstone. The volume concludes with portraits of the SAM board of directors and a three page bibliography.

Laid in is a Swedish-language brochure (circa 1927) promoting fund-raising for building of the Franson-Risbert Memorial. This structure was actually completed in 1929 and is located on Mozart Street in Chicago. It served as the headquarters for SAM, which was founded by Franson, for many decades. Fridolf Risberg was the a longtime treasurer for SAM as well as a professor at the Chicago Theological Seminary.
