The British Secret Service has given up searching for General Wedderburn's kidnapped daughter, now missing in India for twelve years, but the investigation continues. The search team is led into the far reaches of Tibet wherein a lost race is encountered, remnants of a great civilization whose super-sciences were destroyed in a great cataclysm long ago.
John Tain was the pseudonym of Eric Temple Bell (1883-1960), a Scottish-born mathematician and science fiction writer who resided in the United States for most of his life. The Purple Sapphire was Bell's first novel to be published.
Dust jacket illustration by Angelo Donald Rahn (1871-1962). Rahn was born and educated in Philadelphia where he worked as a lithographer and artist. Sometime around 1905 he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he continued his career as a commerical artist.
