Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was an English biologist and anthropologist specializing in comparative anatomy. He was known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Bookplate of Thornton Taft Munger (1883-1975) on front paste-down. Thornton Taft Munger was a pioneering research scientist for the U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest and was instrumental in the creation of Portland's Forest Park and Hoyt Arboretum. His father was the original owner of the book.

Originally gifted to Thornton's father, the theologian, author, and early proponent of animal rights, Theodore Thornton Munger (1830-1910) in 1879 by C. L. Thomas.
