Rules and practices concerning the use of candles in the Roman Rite. The illustrations by James R. Howard, Jr. were made with two considerations: their liturgical correctness and aesthetic presentation.
The author, Reverend Edwin J. Ryan (1884-1960), was a priest in the Archdiocese of New York and held professorships at St. Joseph's Seminary at Yonkers, Downside Abbey (England), the Catholic University of America, and in 1933 was the Professor of Modern Church History and Liturgy at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He is also remembered for making the Latin translation of the Gettysburg Address which is in the Vatican library.
