The Barber's Manual is divided into three parts: [1] The Barber's Manual (158 pp); [2] Barber Ethics and Salesmanship (22 pp.); [3] The Compend by D. W. Rallings [Daniel? W. Rawlings], M.D., including Notes on Bacteriology by Adolph Gehrmann, M.D. This part is an exposition of the diseases affecting the scalp and face along with treatments and their formulas. Gehrmann was a physician and bacteriologist affiliated with the Chicago Department of Health in the 1890s. (128 pp.).
In Chicago, in 1893, Arthur B. Moler (1867-1955) founded the first barber school in the United States. Over the coming decades he developed what became known as the Moler School of Barber Colleges and wrote several texts on barbering and cosmetology. He was elected into the Barber Hall of Fame in 1965.
