Inspired by the author's years living along the Mississippi River, Banjo on My Knee, the author's first novel, tells a story of poor whites who live in flat-boats along Tennessee's shores of that great river. It was made into a movie of the same name in 1936, a musical comedy-drama that starred Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrae. William Faulkner, though uncredited, assisted with the screenplay.
Harry Lacy Hamilton (1896-1975) was an American novelist and playwright. He was born in Chester (Randolph County) Illinois, a city located on the Mississippi River, to a family whose menfolk worked as fisherman on the river. In 1945 he published a sequel to Banjo on My Knee called River Song.
