Description: First edition. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and the publishers logo blind stamped on the front board. Light wear to head and tail of spine and tips of corners; head and tail of spine pushed. Small amount of cracking at hinges (but not broken or exposed). Light smudges and minor spotting on a few pages; some pages evince erased pencil in the margins (being vertical lines along the fore-edge of an occasional paragraph); else clean. Previous owner's name in pencil on ffep; Alliance Publishing Co. of New York's bookseller label on front pastedown. Many illustrations. Frontispiece with tissue guard. xxiv, 406, plus [2] pp. list of recent publications by George Redway.
The Redway logo on the front board depicts a figure with a shield emblazoned with an R and a sitting figure; its border shows the inscription "Shall she feed him and give him the water of wisdom to drink with the bread of understanding."
The previous owner was minister, author, and lecturer Helen Van-Anderson (1859-1931), who was loosely associated with New Thought movement. In 1895 she was ordained a minister for the Church of the Higher Life in Boston, whose motto was "Love is the fulfilling of the law." She was also the author of several books, including The Right Knock, A Mystic Scroll, and The Illumined Life. She moved to the Bay Area of California when she married William Gordon in 1908.
