The 1969 Caldecott Medal winner for illustration. A retelling of a Russian fairy tale by Arthur Ransome. The story was originally published in 1916 in Ransome's book Old Peter's Russian Tales. Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) was an English author and journalist. He had been a witness to the Bolshevik Revolution and was later expelled by the Soviets. During his time in Russia he collected folk tales.
Uri Shulevitz (b. 1935) was born in Warsaw, Poland, and immigrated to the United States in 1959. He studied painting at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and lives in New York City.
