Charles Joseph Finger (1869-1941) was a British born writer, musician, educator, and adventurer. Frontier Ballads was a collection of his favorite songs. In addition to the songs, he also tells how it was sung and the circumstances under which he heard it. He made notes at those times as to exactly how it was sung (the dramatic pauses, the drafts from a mug of beer in between, the waiting while the singer puffed a pipe, the salty comments interspersed between the lines, etc.).
