Fort Tejon was established in 1854 and abandoned in 1864. It's purpose was to guard the Tejon Pass and to control the Indians in the vicinity. It also functioned as a stagecoach/mail stop and was one of the forts where the short lived U.S. Camel Corps was utilized. After the fort was abandoned it was allowed to fall into decay and, at the time of Cullimore's study, it was still in disrepair. Contents: Introduction; Historical Background and Character of Country; Establishment of Fort Tejon; Plan and Construction of Fort Buildings; The Ruins Tell Much Regarding Construction; Conclusions; Bibliography.

Clarence Cullimore, Sr. (1885-1965) was a notable Southern California architect who lived and taught in Bakersfield. He had a passion for adobe architecture and construction and was considered an expert. Several prized Cullimore Adobes can be found around the San Joaquin Valley.
