Detailed and thoroughly illustrated description of the design and operation of the Jacquard machine, a device attached to looms that operated using a system of punched cards in the manufacture of textiles with complex patterns.

Includes a thirty-five page appendix on the preparation and stamping of Jacquard cards.

Emmanuel Anthony Posselt (1858-1921) was born in Germany, the son of a textile mill owner. In 1876 he graduated from the Imperial Government Weaving School and in 1878 immigrated to the United States. Between 1884 and 1891 he served as the first director of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art's textile division. He went on to serve as editor of a leading trade journal, the Textile Record of North America, and established his own private school of textile design and publishing house in Philadelphia.
