Written as part of Van der Elst's campaign to abolish the death penalty, which at the time was done by hanging, sometimes by electrocution. A memoir of her activism in England and describing many cases and their circumstances, including those of debatable innocence, insanity, victims of circumstance, accidental manslaughter, and including the well known Thompson-Bywater executions of 1923, and the execution of mothers and teenagers. A compassionate portrayal of the sufferings endured in unfortunate lives, retched imprisonment, and horrors of execution. Violet Van der Elst (1882-1966) was a British entrepreneur, composer, and campaigner, best remembered for her activities against the death penalty.
