Biographical and historical accounts of many black pioneers, some of them former slaves, to the northwestern states (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, Idaho, Montana, and Utah). Based on more than twenty years of research, it focuses on individuals while conveying a sense of the regional attitudes held regarding blacks and work and housing, law and education.

Perusing the pages, one encounters many interesting and adventurous lives, among them pony express riders, muleskinners, laundresses, grocers, Buffalo Soldiers, one of Mark Twain's playmates, President Lincoln's personal messenger, hoteliers, restaurateurs, barbers, farmers, steamboat cooks, suffragists, civic leaders, sheriffs and policemen, stable owners, caterers, pastors, editors, and railroad men.

The author, Martha E. (Adams) Anderson (1910-1981), was the granddaughter of Edward Clark, an African American Civil War soldier who is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Seattle. She was born in Denver and was reared on a ranch in Idaho. Between 1938 and 1952 she operated a cattle ranch with her husband in eastern Oregon and later settled in Portland.
